State lawmaker retires from Calhoun

State Rep. Laura Hall, D-Huntsville, retired Monday from her position as assistant to the president at Calhoun Community College, a school spokeswoman said Tuesday.

The District 19 representative has 35 years in educa-tion, but a new, controversial state Board of Education policy banning double dipping probably accelerated her plans. She was among 28 legislators on the payroll of one or more of the community colleges.

Under the new policy, once the 63-year-old Hall used up her personal leave to serve in the Legislature she would have needed the approval of Calhoun Presi-dent Marilyn Beck and Chancellor Bradley Byrne to continue working at the school and serving in the Legislature at the same time.
